Conservatory heater: RapidHeat plug-in ceramic heater in an Irish home

A conservatory heater must match the room’s heat loss, not just its floor area. RapidHeat may help in a small, dry, well-insulated sunroom, but it is not a stand-alone solution for a poorly insulated conservatory in winter.

Quick answer

RapidHeat may provide supplementary warmth in a small, dry, well-insulated conservatory up to about 12 m². It is not suitable as the sole heater for a poorly insulated conservatory or a large open-plan space.

RapidHeat plug-in heater

Our pick

Choose the €59 single RapidHeat only for suitable small-room supplementary use; choose the €89 two-pack only if a second suitable dry room also needs warmth.

Why is a conservatory difficult to heat?

Glass, roof panels and exposed floors can lose heat faster than insulated walls. Air leaks around older doors or glazing add to that loss. A conservatory that feels pleasant in afternoon sunshine may need much more heating once the sun disappears.

The heater must replace heat as fast as the room loses it. If the loss exceeds its output, the temperature may stop rising even while the heater runs continuously. Buying a low-wattage appliance does not change that balance, so start with the building rather than an attractive hourly cost.

What size heater does a conservatory need?

SpaceSensible starting point
Small, insulated sunroom below about 9 m²A compact heater may provide supplementary warmth; assess heat loss.
Well-insulated enclosed space around 9–12 m²Near RapidHeat’s coverage limit; results depend on conditions.
Room larger than about 12 m²Do not size one RapidHeat as the main heat source.
Poorly insulated or extensively glazed conservatoryConsider fabric improvements and professionally sized heating.

Floor area gives a starting point, not a reliable wattage prescription. Glazing quality, roof construction, ceiling height and exposure can change the required output substantially. For regular winter use, ask for a heat-loss assessment before choosing fixed heating or buying several portable heaters.

Will RapidHeat heat a conservatory in winter?

It may help in a small, dry, well-insulated sunroom, but it is not suitable on its own for a poorly insulated conservatory. Its stated coverage is up to about 12 m², with warmth in under five minutes in suitable conditions; that does not guarantee winter comfort through a glass roof.

RapidHeat provides 400W on low or 800W on high through ceramic plates and a fan. If the room needs more than 800W to maintain temperature, one unit cannot meet that demand. Do not extend the room-size claim by assuming two units solve every larger or leakier space.

Read how RapidHeat works before deciding whether its output matches occasional supplementary heating rather than full-time winter use.

How much does a conservatory heater cost to run?

Heater typeTypical powerCost per hour*
RapidHeat (low)400W€0.14
RapidHeat (high)800W€0.28
Fan heater2,000W€0.70
Oil-filled radiator1,500–2,500W€0.53–€0.88
Halogen heater1,200W€0.42

*At full power and an electricity unit rate of €0.35/kWh, close to typical Irish standard tariffs. Thermostats cycle heaters off once a room is warm, so real costs are usually lower.

A heater that cannot reach the thermostat target may run at its chosen output for the entire session. In a high-loss conservatory, do not count on frequent thermostat pauses. Check your own tariff: the unit rate used here is an illustration, not a guaranteed rate for your home.

What would an evening of heating cost?

Three hours continuously on RapidHeat high uses 2.4 kWh, costing €0.84 at €0.35/kWh. The same period on low uses 1.2 kWh and costs €0.42. Two units on high for three hours would use 4.8 kWh and cost €1.68, before any thermostat cycling.

That comparison does not mean the cheapest example delivers enough warmth. A larger appliance costs more per hour at full output because it supplies more heat. Resistive electric heaters produce about one kWh of heat per kWh of electricity; no ceramic element can cancel a conservatory’s heat loss.

Our electric heating efficiency guide explains the distinction between lower power, lower bills and sufficient warmth.

Which alternatives suit regular winter use?

An oil-filled radiator can provide steady warmth with no fan, but its required electricity still follows its output and running time. A fixed system may offer better control for a space used daily. A properly assessed heat-pump solution can be worth discussing for a suitable room and installation.

For occasional use, compare convenience, noise, available power and how quickly you need comfort. Do not select purely on a product’s size or the lowest advertised hourly cost. See our RapidHeat and oil-radiator comparison for the practical differences.

  • Occasional mild-weather use: supplementary heating may be sufficient in an insulated room.
  • Daily winter use: assess insulation and heat loss before selecting the heating system.
  • Large or open-plan conservatory: obtain a properly sized solution, not a blanket small-heater recommendation.

How can I keep more warmth inside?

Use suitable thermal blinds or curtains when the sun goes down, keeping them clear of all heaters. Repair draughty seals where appropriate and consider a rug for comfort on cold tiles. Do not obstruct ventilation or conceal signs of leaks with furnishings.

If the conservatory is not in use, close the internal door so it does not draw warmth from the main house. For regular use, ask about suitable roof or glazing improvements and any planning or building considerations. Structural improvements should be assessed for the particular construction, not treated as a universal quick fix.

SEAI provides information about energy improvements and grants, subject to eligibility. Fuel Allowance can assist eligible households with heating costs. Check current terms and do not assume a conservatory upgrade or portable heater is covered.

Where can I safely plug in a conservatory heater?

Only use RapidHeat in a dry location with a suitable, sound Type G wall socket and unobstructed airflow. Never use an extension lead to reach a distant corner or a socket in the adjoining room. Keep clear of blinds, curtains, furniture and clothes, and never cover the heater.

A conservatory with water ingress, wet floors or a socket exposed to moisture is not an appropriate location. Stop using electrical heating if there are signs of damaged sockets or overheating and arrange professional assessment. Overheat protection and auto shut-off are backup features, not substitutes for safe conditions.

Follow the RapidHeat setup instructions, remain present during use and switch off when leaving.

What are the honest pros and cons of RapidHeat here?

  • Benefit: compact supplementary warmth without a floor-standing appliance in a suitable small room.
  • Benefit: thermostat, programmable timer and remote control for managing a supervised session.
  • Limitation: 800W maximum output cannot overcome every glass room’s winter heat loss.
  • Limitation: the fan is about 45 dB, so it is not a silent alternative to a radiator.
  • Limitation: no IP rating means it must stay away from wet areas and moisture exposure.

Should I buy one heater or a bundle?

For a suitable small insulated sunroom, begin with the €59 single unit rather than buying several on the assumption that quantity fixes heat loss. The €89 two-pack makes more sense when you also have a separate suitable dry room, such as a bedroom or home office.

The three-pack costs €119 and the four-pack €179, including VAT. Assess socket positions and heating needs independently for each room. Compare RapidHeat bundle prices after deciding where the heaters can safely and usefully operate.

The official Irish store offers free delivery throughout the Republic of Ireland, dispatch in 1–2 working days and delivery in 2–5 working days. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee from delivery, alongside statutory rights; it is not a promise that a small heater will suit an unsuitable conservatory.

Who RapidHeat is not right for

We'd rather you buy the right heater than return the wrong one. RapidHeat probably isn't for you if:

  • Owners needing one small heater to warm a large glass room throughout winter.
  • Anyone with a poorly insulated conservatory requiring substantial continuous heat.
  • Rooms with leaks, wet areas or no suitable exposed wall socket.
  • People seeking silent operation or unattended frost-protection heating.

Frequently asked questions

Can RapidHeat heat a conservatory?

RapidHeat may provide supplementary warmth in a small, dry, well-insulated conservatory up to about 12 m². It is not suitable as the sole heater for a poorly insulated conservatory or a large open-plan space.

Are two small heaters better than one large heater?

Not automatically. Combined output, heat loss, controls and safe socket positions determine the result. Two 800W heaters use 1.6 kW at full power and do not gain special efficiency by being separate.

What is the cheapest way to heat a conservatory?

Reduce avoidable heat loss and heat it only when needed, then choose a system capable of meeting demand. The lowest hourly wattage is poor value if the room never becomes comfortable.

Will a ceramic heater use less electricity than an oil radiator?

At equal heat output and operating time, both resistive types use broadly similar electricity. Differences in wattage, controls and use patterns explain bills more than the element material.

Can I leave the heater running overnight?

Do not use RapidHeat for unattended overnight heating. If the conservatory needs continuous background warmth or frost protection, discuss an appropriately designed fixed solution with an installer.

Can I use it in a damp conservatory?

No. RapidHeat is not IP-rated and must not be used in wet areas. Resolve leaks or moisture exposure and have any affected electrical installation checked before choosing heating.

Does fast warm-up mean it will stay warm?

No. Initial warmth near a fan-assisted heater is different from maintaining temperature across the room. Once the heater stops, a conservatory with high heat loss can cool quickly.
